The NFL declared on Friday that players might choose to wear Guardian Caps during regular-season games, a significant step toward protecting players. This historic ruling comes after the caps were successfully used during practice sessions for two years, during which time concussion rates were considerably lower.
According to Jeff Miller, the NFL EVP in charge of player health and safety, “Our commitment to player safety is unwavering.” “The convincing evidence demonstrates that Guardian Caps significantly reduce head injuries. Players now have an additional degree of security on game days. Furthermore, the league’s commitment to state-of-the-art safety is evident in the innovative new helmets introduced this year.”
Guardian Caps were first used during the 2022 training camps. They soon gained popularity and were required for usage throughout all contact workouts in 2023. The players most likely to be involved in high-impact collisions—linemen, linebackers, running backs, and fullbacks—must wear them. The only positions immune from this rule are defensive backs, wide receivers, punters, and kickers.
The league stated that Guardian Caps might lessen head impacts by 10% when worn by a single player and by 20% when worn by all players during collisions when they made their debut in 2022.
The NFL continues to take an aggressive stance after that. Players will have 12 new helmet options this year, with eight models specifically designed with linemen and quarterbacks in mind. With their state-of-the-art impact-absorbing technology, these helmets frequently match or even exceed Guardian Cap and helmet combos in terms of protection.
