Jalen Brunson returned on Wednesday night to spark a Knicks rally, despite a horrific foot injury. His arrival ignited a second-half rally that catapulted New York to a decisive 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference playoffs and a 130-121 victory against the Indiana Pacers.
After Brunson’s first-quarter absence, the Indiana Pacers went on a 56-39 run that silenced the Madison Square Garden crowd. But the Knicks great put his injuries to the test at halftime, bringing the arena to its feet and igniting a thunderous cheer that brought back memories of Willis Reed’s historic 1970 NBA Finals run.
Due to Brunson’s motivating presence, the New York Knicks swiftly overcame Indiana’s halftime advantage. With 29 points in the end, he solidified his breakthrough in the playoffs.
There was a price for the Knicks’ victory. Due to a hamstring injury, OG Anunoby had to leave the game in the third quarter. It is unknown how he will fare in Games 3 and 4. The series will now take place in Indianapolis.
The New York Knicks‘ injury woes continue
The fact that New York won shows how resilient they have remained in spite of injuries. Bojan Bogdanovic, Julius Randle, and backup center Mitchell Robinson have all been ruled out for six to eight weeks. Robinson’s injury has added to the team’s long list of injuries.
In praising Brunson’s leadership, head coach Tom Thibodeau said, “I think the deeds speak louder than the words. It conveys your deep concern for your group and other players.”
