When Jean Paul Gaultier said goodbye with his final show at the beginning of last year, some regretted, others thought the time had come because his latest collections were as if pre-programmed. Just when we thought another couture monument had disappeared
Jean paul gaultier haute couture fall 2021 and an energetic rebirth
Gaultier announced that he would still be participating in Haute Couture fashion week, but in a very exciting way: Each collection will invite a brand/designer to add work. The collaboration was thought to be limited to two designers or brands at the level of Ready-To-Wear goods, but Jean Paul Gaultier has legitimized it with the capricious Haute Couture scale and many draconian rules.
The first name he chose was Chitose Abe of Sacai brand from Japan, which is highly appreciated by the fashion world. After two seasons of delay due to the pandemic, the collection has finally been introduced and our wait has not been in vain.
Once one of Rei Kawakubo’s followers, Chitose Abe possesses unique restructuring techniques and fashion vision. With the strength in tailoring and mixing clothes together, Chitose specializes in treating unique coats “like distilled water” that are desired by the fashion world.
With fast-fashion, the guest will be the one to shine. As for high-fashion, the two must work together to complement and enhance each other, and it seems that Jean Paul Gaultier and Chitose Abe have completed that task. We see a newer but not strange Jean Paul Gaultier, and at the same time, we also see that the impression left by the guest designer is not faint.
It can be seen that almost all of Jean Paul Gaultier’s personal imprints are used as the material for “chef” Chitose Abe to set out a hearty dining table: Pointed-breasted corset , manteau, plaid tuxedo suit, Sailor stripes , tattoo prints and denim. It’s great to see Gaultier’s values brought to life in liberal and modern reconstructions through the way Chitose naturally incorporated the MA-1 life jackets and bombers into couture designs.
Two notable Gaultier iconic designs that are naturally renewed include an Aran motif knitted evening gown and a coat inspired by traditional Mongolian clothing worn by Bjork.
If collaboration is the direction of the fashion industry this decade, it seems that Jean Paul Gaultier is the one with the most colorful, bold and exciting strategies. Haute Couture alone, once again, people look forward to what he is about to reveal.
