What I feel is more harmful is those people thinking that “gypsy” meant “carefree” and “rebellious”. This is obviously derived from stereotypes about the ethnic group. For those who don’t know, Roma are a heavily marginalised group facing lots of discrimination. Discrimination against them (and by that I mean physical violence, exclusion from society, following them around in shops because they might steal something) seems to be the last form of open racism that is widely socially acceptable.
