HOLLYWOOD HAWAIIAN SHIRTS – US Navy Lockheed S-3 Viking Of VS-37 All Over Print Hawaiian Shirt
Hollywood, like all great trends, had to get involved. Hawaiian attire was well-marketed by movie stars, crooners, and politicians, who helped to push the vibrant designs into the mainstream. In the film From Here to Eternity, Montgomery Cliff, Burt Lancaster, Ernest Borgnine, and Frank Sinatra all donned magnificent Hawaiian shirts.
Bing Crosby wore his signature Hawaiian shirt and porkpie hat, while Ginger Rogers wore sensuous satin gowns with Hawaiian motifs. In the 1940s, Betty Grable posed for a promotional pin-up in a stunning Hawaiian-style swimsuit. Tom Selleck’s iconic “Magnum P.I.” Hawaiian shirt, which is currently at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, was popular in the 1980s. Other celebrities and cultural icons, like as Elvis Presley and Jimmy Buffet, also aided in the mainstreaming of Hawaiian shirts.
HAWAIIAN SHIRTS ON THE BORDER
Hawaiian shirts with a border had a unique degree of symmetry that made them particularly appealing. Border Hawaiian shirts were a luxurious item by today’s standards since so much fabric was wasted in their production. The shirts had fantastic designs that were so well-planned that the sleeves, sides, and hems were all the same.
Pockets occasionally matched the shirt pattern to a tee’s perfection. And some designs never appeared on the same garment twice. Hawaiian shirts with a border tended to be longer to show off the fabric designs (why you should not tuck in a bottom design shirt).
Beautiful sundresses were made using the same tailoring technique. The engineering print Hawaiian shirt is quite similar to the border shirt, with the exception that the engineered shirts’ images are significantly broader, frequently spanning from seam to seam.
TEA-TIME
The Hawaiian muumuu began as a loose-fitting dress for ladies of all shapes and sizes. It was created by missionaries who wanted to cover the bodies of Hawaiian women who had previously only worn a skirt. Muumuus were simple to produce and fit a wide range of people, making them suitable for presenting to the locals of the islands.
They quickly became a part of Hawaiian folklore and were designated as a traditional garment. A unique sequence of women’s clothes arose as the muumuu morphed and mingled with traditional Asian styles. The pake muu featured long, wing-like sleeves inspired on a Chinese design for casual entertaining.
A tight-fitting, fitted sleeveless shirt with a short mandarin collar was a popular tea-timer. The holoku was a full-length dress for formal occasions, while the holomu was a tailored garment for more formal evening wear. Ginger flowers, plumeria, hibiscus, orchids, and birds-of-paradise have all appeared on women’s Hawaiian attire over the years. The prints on Aloha shirts generally complement the designs on women’s clothes.
THE ROOTS OF CASUAL DAY CAN BE FOUND IN HONOLULU.
The Honolulu Board of Supervisors enacted a resolution in 1947 that allowed—no, encouraged—city and county employees to wear Hawaiian shirts from June 1 to October 31 each year to fight the heat and promote Hawaiian pride. This one act by a local government has had a significant impact on businesses and government departments all around the world, particularly in hotter climates.
For hot weather, several parts of the world have adopted more casual dress patterns. This modest Hawaiian custom gave rise to the tradition of “casual Friday.”
FRIDAY ALOHA
Every Friday in Hawaii is Aloha Friday. It’s the day when you can proudly wear your favorite Aloha dress or blouse. Downtown Honolulu is a sea of Aloha wear every Friday, especially during lunchtime, when a free performance is sometimes held in the plaza at the corner of King and Bishop streets.
Many corporate offices reflect Hawaii’s Aloha attitude. The Aloha State is the originator of this lovely tradition for companies who offer a “casual” day on Fridays.
WEEK OF ALOHA
In 1947, the inaugural Aloha Week festival was conducted. Local inhabitants were excitedly sporting Hawaiian shirts and gowns to help market local items by the time of the 1948 event. Hawaiian shirts quickly become a symbol of Hawaiian pride and industry. Aloha Week is still running strong in the Hawaiian Islands after more than 50 years. It’s a perfect excuse to put on your best Aloha attire, eat “ono Hawaiian kine grinds” (local food), and listen to and see Hawaiian music and art.
CRUISIN’
The Matson Line commissioned painters to produce lovely Hawaiian paintings for use as menu covers, one of numerous luxury cruise ship lines that advertised trip to exotic Hawaii. Fabric designs on Hawaiian shirts and dresses featured some of these unusual images. The Aloha spirit is embodied by cruise culture, thus the two were a natural fit.
MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF HAWAII
Manufacturers started adding the magical phrase “Made in Hawaii” to their Aloha print apparel labels in the 1950s. (During a visit to Hawaii in 1950, a trade commissioner from Los Angeles purportedly came up with the idea.) On the mainland and around the world, this new mark raised the value and attractiveness of authentic Hawaiian shirts and dresses.
In a market crowded with cheap imitations and mail-order clothes, “Made in Hawaii” allowed authentic Aloha apparel to stand out. Aloha clothing or Hawaiian shirts are still popular with tourists, Hawaiian natives, and anyone who wants to be a part of the island life no matter where they are.
Bold colors, complex patterns, and tropical prints evoking Hawaiian life may be found on the shirts. Visit Hawaiian shirt to see the current fashions and order a piece of the islands for yourself if you’re in the market for a new Hawaiian shirt, dress, or other sort of Aloha wear.
