The United States allegedly stoked Europe’s gas supply problem by pressuring European leaders to take the “suicidal” step of terminating economic and energy cooperation with Moscow, according to a statement from Russia’s foreign ministry on Tuesday.
Russia claims that America is to blame for Europe’s gas supply crisis
After Russia cut gas flows westward, Europe is currently experiencing its greatest gas supply crisis ever, with energy prices skyrocketing and German importers even considering the possibility of rationing in the EU’s largest economy.
According to Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, when asked what had to happen for Nord Stream 1 to start pumping once more, she responded, “Listen, you are asking me questions that even children know the answer to: people who started this need to finish this.”
She claimed that despite the fact that Moscow had been a dependable energy source since the Soviet era, the United States had long wanted to sever its relations with key European powers like Germany.
On the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Zakharova told Reuters that “Washington’s influence prevailed.” “In the European Union, political forces that act as “sheep-provocateurs” have gained power.”
She said, “It’s complete suicide, but it seems they’ll have to go through this.”
Russia has been charged with energy extortion by the United States and the European Union after Moscow cut down gas shipments to clients in Europe. Russia said that sanctions had prevented the repair of technical issues with a compressor station.
According to President Vladimir Putin, the West’s imposition of the harshest sanctions in modern history—a move the Kremlin claims is equal to a declaration of economic war—is what started the energy crisis.
