In Game 7 of their NBA playoff series, the Minnesota Timberwolves made history on Sunday night by defeating the Denver Nuggets 98-90 after trailing by 20 points. The Timberwolves made it to the Western Conference finals, something they hadn’t done since 2004 thanks to this incredible comeback, the biggest in a Game 7 in the previous 25 postseasons.
This thrilling victory was hinted at a year prior when Anthony Edwards told Jamal Murray, “We’ll be back,” after the Nuggets had defeated them in the playoffs. We’ll see you again after we’re completely loaded. Edwards’ prediction came to pass as the Timberwolves overcame a 20-point deficit to defeat the defending champs, driven by an outstanding 23-point, 12-rebound effort by Karl-Anthony Towns.
The Nuggets lost to the Miami Heat in the conference finals for the seventh time in a row, despite heroic efforts from Nikola Jokic (34 points, 19 rebounds) and Jamal Murray (35 points). They also made history by being the first team to lose a Game 7 after taking a halftime lead of more than fifteen points.
Six players scored in double figures, demonstrating the true team effort that led to the Timberwolves’ victory. Known more for his defense than his offense, Rudy Gobert surprised everyone by scoring eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. With 23 points, Jaden McDaniels maintained his incredible postseason run, and Naz Reid offered a vital spark off the bench.
Despite having trouble with his shot, Edwards maintained his composure and aggressiveness, eventually making a crucial three-pointer in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory. A key factor in the Timberwolves’ victory was their defensive tenacity in the second half, which held the Nuggets to just 37 points.
Karl-Anthony Towns, who won the game with a dominant effort that silenced detractors, had a unique meaning for the team as a whole. For Tim Connelly, the president of basketball operations for the Timberwolves and a former general manager of the Nuggets, it was also a personal victory.
As they get ready to play the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference finals, the Timberwolves will now have to contend with a new problem. They’re prepared to face anything standing in their way of winning the title because of the confidence they gained from their incredible comeback and the momentum they gained from their historic victory.
