According to a police spokeswoman, rookie running back Brian Robinson of the Washington Commanders was shot many times Sunday night in Washington, D.C., during what may have been an attempted robbery.

With what the team described as “non-life threatening injuries,” he was transferred to a hospital. A club spokeswoman reported that Robinson was at the hospital with co-owners Dan and Tanya Snyder, president Jason Wright, coach Ron Rivera, team physician Dr. Anthony Casolaro, and clinical psychologist Dr. Barbara Roberts.
In a tweet sent out late on Sunday, Rivera stated, “I just got done visiting with Brian.” “He asked me to thank everyone for their kind comments, prayers, and support because he is in good spirits. He wants his teammates to know that he loves them all, respects their efforts, and will return to doing what he does best soon.”
The incident occurred in the district’s 1000 block of H Street, NE, just before 6 p.m. ET, according to Dustin Sternbeck, the Metro Police Department’s director of communications in Washington. Robinson was found by the responding officers to have “a couple of gunshot wounds to his lower limbs,” according to Sternbeck.
He was sent right away to a nearby hospital. Police have identified two possible suspects, according to Sternbeck, and a gun has been found not far from the scene of the event. He claimed that it is still unclear to the investigators whether Robinson was the target of a carjacking or merely an attempted armed robbery.
An inquiry is still being conducted. Robinson became Washington’s primary early-down back this summer after the coaches took notice of his ability to run inside while displaying consistency and power. However, he would continue to share the load with third-down back J.D. McKissic and Antonio Gibson.
Robinson did not dress but traveled with the club to Baltimore on Saturday night for the preseason’s last game. Robinson left Alabama in the third round and was selected by Washington.
