The costumes of the Regent period established a poetic color system. They contribute significantly to create mood and describe each character’s personality. Costume designer Alexandra Byrne and her team have researched many documents on British fashion history to recreate the scene of the 19th century in the most aesthetic and realistic way.

Emma is directed by Autumn de Wilde and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Emma Woodhouse along with other actors such as Johnny Flynn, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, Mia Goth, and more.

As a lady who grew up in velvet, it’s no surprise that Emma Woodhouse has a massive wardrobe of styles, showcasing her knowledge of the latest trends. Felt fabric was used for the typical day gowns of the Regent period, while the ruffled details and lace around the neck were the “fashion” of young ladies of the nineteenth century.

Spencer (short jacket) was originally a type of men’s clothing in the 1790s but soon became popular with women. They are made of lightweight materials, mainly to diversify the mixes and add color to the white cotton dresses inside. Some of the designs, such as Emma’s pale pink short coat, are replicas of outfits that are kept in the museum.

Throughout the film, Anya Taylor-Joy wears a total of five spencer tops and at least four pelisses, whose colors and styles change with the four seasons of the year. Winter is quiet in blues and grays; Spring is naturally softer with pinks and yellows; Pure white makes summer cool and autumn is “personified” by a warm yellow , red and brown color palette .

During this period, the competition for female appearance was very fierce, especially with the aristocracy. Every detail on the ladies’ costumes is taken seriously, especially the fussiness of the hats. When going to a formal place like a church or a party, Emma will cleverly choose ton-sur-ton hats with the color of the dress, decorated with flowers, bows, ribbons or feathers .

In the film, Emma befriends Harriet Smith (Mia Goth), a teenage girl in town. She usually doesn’t have a personal opinion and follows all of Emma’s instructions. Therefore, viewers can easily see the similarities in the layout and fashion sense of these two characters. However, because of her poor background, Harriet’s outfit is somewhat simpler, mainly using neutral and elegant tones.

A feminine, gentle, spring-like appearance is perhaps the most perfect image to describe Harriet. But it is worth noting that her clothes are relatively lax and the general invisible is imposed on class distinctions. It also shows the weak, somewhat fragile character of the character.

Jane Fairfax (Amber Anderson) is also a representative of the younger generation in the film. However, in contrast to Emma and Harriet’s lively exuberance, Jane is portrayed as a bit more self-contained and quiet. She often wears outfits with the main white tone, with a petticoat inside and elegant and gentle jewelry.

Although Emma doesn’t really have a villain line, the mean girl of the village must be Mrs. Elton. This is a frivolous woman who does not know how to control her emotions and likes to put her status above everyone else. Mrs. Elton likes to wear as many accessories as possible.

She always appears with bright orange or bright yellow outfits and then wears a large necklace to highlight her long neck. Although quite rich, having a “what and this” background, her excessive display inadvertently turned her into a “rich” lady.

Regency style is also clearly outlined through men’s clothing in the movie Emma . For example, the thick wool on Mr. Knightley is sharply sewn with M-shaped edge cuts at the lapel. He and Frank Churchill both loved waistcoats , but the tie was tied in a different way.
