Paco Rabanne’s moments make the world remember forever

On February 3, Paco Rabanne passed away at his home in Portsall, France. He lived to be 88 years old. The news of designer Paco Rabanne’s death was confirmed by the Spanish group PUIG – the company that bought his fashion and perfume business in 1987 – confirmed. The fashion world bows its nose, sending one of the designers at the forefront of the wave who brought rocket-age technical inspiration into fashion, leaving behind futuristic designs that still inspire today. inspiration for the grave.

Francisco Rabaneda was born in 1934 on the outskirts of San Sebastián, Spain, but at an early age, he immigrated to France for asylum after the Spanish Civil War. Because his father was a soldier executed in the war, the boy changed his name to Paco Rabanne and was raised by his mother, the chief tailor of designer Cristobál Balenciaga. “Bearing the heart of Spain and received by France,” his memoirs wrote.

At the age of 18, Paco Rabanne studied architecture at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. But in his spare time, the young man designs jewelry and buttons. “I realized that with fashion, I have more opportunities to be creative,” he once said. In the end, Paco Rabanne turned completely and entered the fashion field after graduating from school.

When establishing his own brand, Paco Rabanne immediately created a buzz for his “lack of fabric” designs. He mainly creates metal products or new technology materials such as luminous leather, chain mesh, knitted fabric with aluminum fiber… This innovative spirit helped him soon become a fashion house. Senior Elsa Schiaparelli, Balenciaga, and Hubert de Givenchy welcome.

To honor the eminent designer who has dedicated his creations to fashion history, we take a look back at five moments in his career that have crystallized forever.

At the age of 30, Rabanne presented her first fashion drawings. Just two years later, in 1966, he launched his first fashion show with a provocative theme: Twelve Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials.

Presented at the George V in Paris, the collection completely broke with the conventions of the time. The costumes are crafted from eco-paper, plastic and metal, and assembled with wire and glue. Models walked barefoot on the catwalk – a first in fashion at the time!

Rabanne’s fashion was more revealing than hidden, bluntly breaking the norm, which every woman of the time aspired to. In a 2002 interview, he said: “In France, in the sixties, we had a women’s liberation movement that was similar to the one in the US… That was the time when women emerged to become warriors. soldiers, because they need to affirm their liberation aspirations. Armor is almost essential.”

Building on the success of his debut collection, Paco Rabanne continues to experiment with new materials. His designs were extremely popular with the most famous stars in the international entertainment industry at that time, strong women with opinions. It was Audrey Hepburn, who wore his design in the movie Two for the Road (1967). Singer Brigitte Bardot promoted Paco Rabanne’s costume in the MV Contact (1968).

But if there’s one star that really goes down in history as the iconic face of the brand, it’s definitely Jane Fonda in the 1968 Roger Vadim-directed Barbarella.

Barbarella is a sci-fi film, borrowed from a comic book by Jean-Claude Forest, reflecting a playful and sometimes sly spirit. Paco Rabanne was invited to build a wardrobe for the heroine Jane Fonda. He offers metallic corsets, nude-effect Plexiglas bras, silver spacesuit jackets, and sexy lamé outfits.

A year after the movie was released, humans officially set foot on the moon. Paco Rabanne’s astronaut-inspired designs, along with other designers such as André Courrégès and Pierre Cardin, create a whole new trend in fashion that reflects the human race to space.

In May 1969, on the occasion of the opening of the world diamond exhibition, Paco Rabanne created the “most expensive” dress in the world. The mini design has the familiar A-shaped shape of Mod Style, made from gold and diamonds. The designer used 9kg of gold, melted to form a thousand pieces of metal scales, connected by 5000 gold chains. On the chest are 22 diamonds totaling 300 carats.

Coco Chanel was not a fan of Rabanne, so much so that she derogatorily referred to him as a “metalworker” instead of a designer. The Le 1969 all-metal handbag was born as a humorous response to Paco Rabanne’s scathing moniker.

At the time, Coco Chanel was completing her chain handle bag. In response, Paco Rabanne also decided to design a handbag with metal straps. But instead of leather, it was mounted from coin-sized metal discs connected by chain rings. The metal strap has a rudimentary design like a tantalizing Chanel bag with a gold-plated chain handle.

After all, Paco Rabanne is not interested in designing clothes to wear but “Creativity must shock”, he often repeats this. But in fashion, the more strange something is, the more it is noticed and desired to possess. Two famous singers Brigitte Bardot and Françoise Hardy have hand in hand with his design during his life. Today, more than fifty years later, Le 1969 is still in the arms of the most fashionable women.

Although finding fame in the fashion industry, Paco Rabanne was financially successful when it entered the perfume industry.

In 1979, the designer launched Métal, a fragrance with layers directed “for young women who love metal accessories”. In 1968, the Spanish group PUIG bought the license to produce perfumes from Paco Rabanne and began to launch memorable fragrances in the market, starting with the name Calandre in 1969, a decisive fragrance. Predictive and intense was born with the desire to challenge traditional perfumery.

Since then, production has never stopped and year after year sees new products reap sales success. Among them, the 1 Million lines in the shape of a gold bar has gone down in history, as the most famous and best-selling perfume in the world in the field of men’s fragrances.

Perhaps because he was too successful financially thanks to perfume, he announced his early retirement when he launched Haute Couture Autumn-Winter 2000 collection. Capital, because he sold the brand to PUIG group in 1987, so he did not. and run a vibrant business. However, Paco Rabanne’s designs are still famous because they are loved and used by stars.
