In 2022, the Steelers have won one game and lost another, but few people have praised their offensive play. Change may be on the way with another game tonight in Cleveland and a brief break before the Jets arrive in Week Four.
A benching of Mitch Trubisky might occur as soon as tonight
And even if some are pushing for the firing of offensive coordinator Matt Canada, it won’t happen anytime soon. There are no backup offensive coordinators on teams. They do have backup quarterbacks, though.
The Steelers have a starter as well as a backup on the way. A first-round pick whose name was chanted by paying customers both during the preseason and during the regular season after he started as the starting quarterback for the nearby college team.
Kenny Pickett is prepared to play, a league source told PFT.
Trubisky might be sent to the Steelers’ bench at this point. Receivers claim to be open even if playcalling has drawn criticism. Consequently, the plays are effective. The method of delivering the ball to them is not.
Some people believe that Trubisky is holding back when it comes to throwing the ball and that he needs to start letting it fly otherwise he risked getting the hook.
Mike Tomlin, the coach, is still following Trubisky. Is the remainder of the structure? Is the changing area? If the pendulum hasn’t already swung, it’s likely to do so soon. It might be Trubisky’s last opportunity to play tonight in Cleveland.
A change tonight would be dangerous. In the brief week, Pickett did not play with the first team. The possibility still there, though, if Trubisky falters. And if the offensive struggles tonight, the extra three days to get ready for the Jets might be just what the Steelers need to truly get Pickett ready.
Before things spiral out of hand for the Steelers, something urgently needs to happen. Both the game tonight and the one after that can be won. Then what? At the Eagles, Dolphins, Bills, and Buccaneers. The current combined record of the teams is 8-0.
