The Bears might as well be staring into a mirror as they prepare ready for their Week 3 clash against the Texans. These two organisations are in comparable predicaments, employ comparable strategies, and pursue similar goals.
What to anticipate in the Week 3 game: Bears vs Texans scouting report
Given that they have been practising against a similar scheme all summer, Matt Eberflus thinks that might help the offence get back on track. Alan Williams, on the other hand, is unconcerned about the Texans offensive having an advantage over his team. Regardless of how well-versed the Texans are, he will have the defence ready to handle anything comes their way.
The Texans, like the Bears, aim to rely on their run game, are led by a second-year quarterback, and have only Brandin Cooks as their top wide receiver option. Davis Mills, the quarterback, will go first. Mills was supposed to follow Tyrod Taylor last season and learn the ropes, just like Justin Fields. Mills, like Fields, was thrust into action early after Week 2 when Taylor hurt himself.
There were many positive aspects to Mills’ debut season, despite the Texans’ dismal 2-9 record when he started last year. He had a high percentage of completion, averaging 228 throwing yards per game, and threw more touchdown passes than interceptions (16 to 10).
There was some expectation that Mills might move forwards this year, but his performances in 2022 have been a bit of a mixed bag. In Week 1, Mills was proficient at play-action passes and could throw accurately while moving. Additionally, despite knowing he would immediately follow up with a big shot, he displayed courage in the pocket by stepping under pressure to make the throw.
The Texans’ tie resulted from Mills’ playmaking against the Colts. Mills struggled to withstand pressure from the Broncos defense in Week 2. In addition to having more difficulty with accuracy, Mills mishandled the ball twice while being sacked. The Texans recovered the ball each time, but the fumble was ended in each instance.
The Texans rely on Brandin Cooks to lead the way in the passing game. He has received double-digit targets in each of their games and currently has the most receptions on the club with 11. The Texans rely on a variety of players to fill in the remaining receiving duties after that.
O.J. Howard, Pharaoh Brown, and Brevin Jordan are the three tight ends that they use throughout the entire field. Together, those three players have 10 catches for 94 yards and two scores. Rex Burkhead, the team’s second-leading receiver with seven catches, is also frequently targeted in the passing game by them.
The Texans want their offense to flow through their running game, just like the Bears do. Their running game hasn’t been particularly successful, unlike the Bears’. With his strong running style, rookie Dameon Pierce was popular before the season even started.
The Texans were sufficiently assured by his strong showings in the exhibition games that they decided to replace lead back Marlon Mack with simply Pierce and Rex Burkhead. Pierce and Burkhead, however, have both averaged less than four yards per carrying this year.
