How to properly wash sports clothes to avoid color fading and loss of elasticity of the material

To maintain a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise is essential. As a result, sportswear has become a core part of the modern wardrobe. Gradually, sportswear such as sports bras, hoodies, leggings, jogger pants, and tennis skirts… have gone beyond the limits of sports to become a youthful street fashion.

How to properly wash sports clothes to avoid color fading and loss of elasticity of the material

The common feature of sports fashion is that the material has good elasticity, hugs the body, and has good sweat absorption when exercising. So how do maintain these features of the costume? That is applying the right ways to wash and maintain sports clothes.

Sportswear is often made of spandex fabrics – elastane fibers, to be exact. Products with good sweat absorption are usually made from polyester. Swimsuits, running windbreakers, and tennis skirts are often made of shiny nylon. Jogger pants, and hoodies made of cotton mixed with the three synthetic fibers mentioned above.

The characteristic of these synthetic fibers is that they do not absorb sweat, so there is less odor left behind. That’s why they dry quickly when compared to clothes made of natural fibers. However, they easily lose elasticity when washed in high heat or dried in the dryer. Besides, washing them at a strong intensity will cause the fabric to quickly ruffle.

Therefore, you should choose the modes after washing sports clothes to limit damage to the elasticity of the material, to avoid color fading.

If the garment is heavily scented with sweat, pre-soak it before washing.

You dilute a bowl of cold water with 3-4 caps of white vinegar. Soak clothes for 15 to 30 minutes. Vinegar will help disinfect, thereby eliminating the smell of sweat quickly.

If sports clothes have stains from grease, how to deal with them?

Synthetic fibers are often difficult to stain because synthetic fibers are difficult to color. However, sometimes the stains from grease are quite strong, so you can use the following tips to pre-clean them before washing:

1. Use powder (cornstarch, baby powder) to absorb oil from clothes. You sprinkle powder on the surface of the garment, wait 30 minutes, then wash as usual. This method can also be applied to natural fabrics such as linen or silk.

2. Use hand sanitizer gel to immediately apply to grease stains. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer gel will quickly remove dirt. You can also use this trick to remove lipstick or soy stains.

Note: Do not apply to linen or silk because it can cause fabric dyeing, nor do you use it for leather because it will cause dryness and cracking of the leather.

Washing mode with cold water (15 – 25ºC) or warm (25 – 40ºC), in gentle mode (delicate), is most suitable for washing sports clothes. Avoid hot water (60ºC or more) because hot temperatures will easily damage the clothes, causing the quality of the product to deteriorate quickly. A strong washing mode will make the elastic fibers weaker and increase the possibility of fabric ruffles.

Mesh pockets will limit the smooth surface of yoga pants, and jogging jackets from being scratched during washing. The mesh pocket also helps to avoid friction on the surface of the swimsuit, helping to limit ruffled fabric.

If possible, you should categorize products. Leggings in a separate mesh pocket, hoodie in another. In the event that all sportswear must be washed together, items of the same color should be placed in the same laundry bag.

For sports bras, if you have underwires, you should wash them in a dedicated mesh bag for bras to protect the shape of the frames. Otherwise, the shirt will easily be distorted, thereby no longer fitting your body.

We’ve always liked the pleasant floral scent of fabric softener. However, the truth is that most of us always go overboard when it comes to adding conditioner. This excess content causes the conditioner to stay on the garment, thereby weakening the fibers and causing them to deteriorate quickly.

Using white vinegar has the ability to kill bacteria, deodorize, and not create a residue of soap on clothes. White vinegar is also safe for fabric dyes, so it won’t discolor the garment.

Hand washing is the recommended method for sportswear, especially for those with fine mesh or embellishments. For this wash, put some laundry detergent in a basin filled with cool water, then submerge the item and gently stir the water with your hands to dissolve the soap. Soak for 30 minutes, and rinse with cool water to remove soap. Then, remove excess water by pressing on the garment instead of wringing.

Know that some cold and humid areas in winter like Da Lat, Hanoi often prefer dryers. However, because sportswear is made of synthetic materials, it can still dry quickly without a musty smell, needing to be dried.

In fact, drying the product in the shade also limits the color fading of the product, because direct sunlight easily discolors the fabric.

Sportswear should be washed immediately after each use. This is the kind of clothing you should not save on wearing many times before washing.

According to Madeline Miller, product specialist for cleaning brand The Laundress, after every exercise, whether light or intense, your skin will sweat, leading to the accumulation of dirt. on the costume. If you wear old sports clothes again, your skin will come in contact with bacteria, which will cause irritation.
